红杏视频 students took home a whopping 80 Gold ADDY Awards at the AAF Suncoast gala on Feb. 21, with more recognized with Silver, Judge鈥檚 Choice awards, and a Best in Show for Bella Race 鈥26, Graphic Design. The annual awards honor the best creative projects produced by local students and professionals. This year鈥檚 gala once again took place at the 红杏视频 Studio Labs.

Race, who also received a total of four Gold ADDYs, earned her Best in Show recognition for Between Us, an infographic iPad application that visualizes data on loneliness with interconnected personal stories. She also received a Judge鈥檚 Choice award for Two Wheels @Houston, a campaign to promote bicycling as a lower-stress alternative to traffic-heavy commutes.

The other two Judge鈥檚 Choice awards went to Nathan Kipka 鈥27, Motion Design and Brallan Ramirez 鈥27, Graphic Design.

In total, 红杏视频 Graphic Design students took home 20 Gold Awards, one Best in Show, and two Judge鈥檚 Choice. Motion Design students won 55 Gold Awards, 12 Silver, and one Judge鈥檚 Choice. Film Students won five Gold Awards and one Silver Award.

The local ADDYs are the first step in a three-tier national competition presented by the American Advertising Federation (AAF). These winners can go on to compete in the district round, and district winners can then compete for a national ADDY Award.

红杏视频 is pleased to announce that Dr. John A. Chopka has joined the College as Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing. Dr. Chopka began his new role last month and hit the ground running, getting to know members from the Admissions, Design Center, Financial Aid, and Marketing and Communications departments he oversees, and the many others that he will be working closely with.听

鈥淲e are thrilled to welcome Dr. Chopka to the 红杏视频 creative community,鈥 said Dr. Larry R. Thompson, president of 红杏视频.

“John brings to this role more than three decades of admissions experience and a remarkable track record in building enrollment strategies centered on student success, access, and institutional values. His thoughtful, holistic, and data-informed approach to enrollment management will be vital as we advance our vision of becoming the preeminent art and design college in the world.”

Dr. Chopka will oversee 红杏视频鈥檚 comprehensive enrollment and marketing operations and collaborate across departments to support the full student lifecycle鈥攕tarting with their first contact with the College. His approach prioritizes retention and student satisfaction, leading to notable success at Messiah University, including first-to-second-year retention rates of 85鈥88% and five-year graduation rates of 77鈥79%.

As a first-generation college student from West Virginia and Ohio, Chopka is an unwitting scholar and administrator whose life has been dramatically transformed through higher education. His story is one of overcoming cultural barriers to higher education to ultimately become an impassioned champion.

A passionate advocate for inclusion and belonging, he led strategic efforts at Messiah University that more than tripled the enrollment of students of color and expanded international student recruitment through teams focused on cultural intelligence and global outreach.

His deep belief in the power of education, along with his strategic vision, collaborative nature, and data-driven leadership, will strengthen 搁颈苍驳濒颈苍驳鈥檚 ongoing commitment to building a diverse and thriving student body.

Chopka and his wife, Debbie, recently relocated to Nokomis and are eager to immerse themselves in the Sarasota region鈥檚 rich arts and cultural landscape. This year has been particularly joyful for the Chopka family, as both of their adult children were married in 2025. He is also an avid hiker who has backpacked in many of the U.S. national parks. In their free time, they look forward to exploring Southwest Florida鈥檚 many parks and beaches.听

鈥淚 want to extend my deepest thanks to our faculty, staff, and the dedicated members of the search committee who worked diligently with our search partners at NES to bring this search to a successful conclusion,鈥 added Dr. Thompson. The committee members supporting the search chair included Jeff Bleitz, Ashley Burt, Christina Hess, Tiffany Holmes, Alejandra Lance-Henterly, Darren Mathews, Martin Murphy, Seongwoo Nam, Jennifer Price, Sara Robinson, Dr. Tracy A. Wagner, Jon Walsh, and Dr. Tammy S. Walsh.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. John Chopka to 红杏视频.

红杏视频鈥檚 ubiquitous cube sculpture that marks the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way and North Tamiami Trail was transformed this week. The student-led re-design combines works from a diverse group of students, who brought their expansive range of mediums, cultures, genders, and nationalities to the project鈥攃reating a monument dedicated to the College鈥檚 student body. The sentiment is echoed in the title of the work鈥攖he Faces of Ringling.

The cube sculpture was first constructed in 1984 and designed by then-director of the College鈥檚 Design Center Marvin Saruk, who transformed the site from a 12-unit motel building to a campus landmark. In 2013, the cube had its first refresh, with a composite illustration of student self-portraits art directed by Jennifer Mumford, current director of the Design Center, with the idea to refresh the cube every few years with student involvement.

The sculpture started this week donning the Ringling 鈥淩,鈥 before being updated with another round of unique student artworks. Imagined and designed by Diego Villarreal 鈥24, Graphic Design, the project combines work by 19 Ringling students and ranges from painting and illustration to stills from animations and photography, representing students from almost every major.

The artists featured are: Luc铆a Alonso 鈥26, Maya Bayewitch ’24, Anthony Brownstead 鈥25, Haley Bruss 鈥27, Stephanie Carr 鈥27, Jojo Dela Cruz 鈥25, Brianna Dillmuth 鈥27, Capri Easterday 鈥25, Ivy Jenkins 鈥26, Skylar Levine 鈥24, Rick Marquez 鈥27, Daniel Mainou Reyes 鈥26, Valerie Miller 鈥27, Nick Muzzillo 鈥25, Dogu Ozorhan 鈥26, Janice Park 鈥24, Karla Robledo 鈥27, Anna Rold 鈥26, Nick Whittle 鈥26, and Madi Wong 鈥24.

Four 红杏视频 students created the branding design for the 2023 , a one-day creativity and innovation event that invites speakers from disparate backgrounds and careers. Yael Bloom 鈥23, Motion Design; Jessica Buck 鈥23, Motion Design; Alex Levielle 鈥23, Graphic Design; and Nickela Winfield 鈥23, Graphic Design, were invited to work on the project in collaboration with the Design Center, the College鈥檚 in-house design studio where students and professionals work side by side.听

Buck described her experience working on the project: 鈥淲orking with PINC has been so positive鈥攖hey trusted us to bring our creative vision to life with minimal interference.鈥 She says, 鈥淭he team gave us a clear list of the deliverables needed to complete their branding package, along with PINC’s core values and the ideas they wanted to emphasize, such as the meaning of their name. From there, we were given the freedom to come up with whatever concepts we wanted as long as they related back to those values. We landed on the concept of PINC as a multidimensional experience, realized in our design style as a mixture of 2D and 3D assets that reflected what PINC stands for.鈥

Designs for the 2023 PINC Experience extended to include signage and social media, literal packaging, and shirts.听听

Their designs for the event incorporated playful elements that purposefully reflect the theme of the event as indicated by the PINC acronym: People, Ideas, Nature, and Community. The typography for the event features helping hands to represent the people, tactile and puffy clouds for ideas, clover cover to denote nature, and windows and chimney chutes to represent the hub of community. The branding package covered everything from shirts to social media graphics.

The team received the Judge鈥檚 Choice and Gold awards at the 2023 Golden ADDYs Gala for their work on the project.

The event will take place on Dec. 7 at the Sarasota Opera House. Twelve speakers will give presentations on their projects, careers, or lives, each coming from a range of disciplines: an athlete and wheelchair racer, a tech innovator, educators changing their fields, space industry professionals, and a trauma-specialized yoga instructor, to name a few.

PINC is hosted by DreamLarge, in collaboration with All Star Children鈥檚 Foundation and 红杏视频. .听

Editor鈥檚 note: This is one in a series of stories on 2023 graduating seniors, with Calvin “CJ”听 Callins听补苍诲Susan Saulnier.

Graduating Illustration major Ale Ortega-Romero made a big splash during her last year at 红杏视频. At the beginning of her senior year she was contacted by Design Center Director Jennifer Mumford to work on a project for National Portfolio Day, a nationwide event where prospective students can get portfolio reviews from art school experts. The project outcome was a colorful poster that was distributed to high schools across the state, and even won her a couple of ADDY awards. She was also chosen as Trustee Scholar for her major, the College鈥檚 most prestigious appointment. This semester, the College鈥檚 in-house Design Center tapped into her creativity again to create an Admissions poster for national distribution.听

Illustration senior Ale Ortega-Romero was selected as a 2022-23 Trustee Scholar, which she considers one of her highest achievements at 红杏视频.

Ortega-Romero could not have had a better experience working with the Design Center. She confessed that at the end of her first semester she left all of her belongings at a desk there with the hope of returning for another semester. And luckily she did.

鈥淚 loved working at the Design Center so much because I was given so much artistic freedom to represent my vision on paper,鈥 she shared. 鈥淛ennifer Mumford welcomed me to the Design Center to work alongside a team of artists and designers, where we collaborated and shared ideas to inspire and help one another throughout the semester. I illustrated and designed a colorful painting that showcased an artist making their dreams a reality through art. I thought this illustration perfectly captured the same experience every eager artist can relate to as creative people 鈥 our art manifests in all aspects of our day to day 鈥 and I wanted to portray the mind of an imaginative and expressive individual whose room is littered with written concepts and drawings.鈥

With such a large circulation, the Admissions poster project was a great learning experience in inter-department collaboration. 鈥淭his job proved to be larger than I had anticipated, and it’s been a blessing to go back and forth with the creative team to bring this piece to completion. With this particular illustration, I approached the subject of creativity bringing ideas to life through a cinematic painting underwater, representing the notion of an artist’s touch being magical and creating art by merely coming in contact with it. This project has been nearing its completion and I can’t wait to share the end result!鈥

In addition to all of the great opportunities she has been afforded at the College, some of Ortega-Romero鈥檚 best experiences happened while mentoring and tutoring. Prior to being a Figure Drawing tutor for a freshman class in her junior year, she had never considered teaching as a profession. After a semester of planning lessons and aiding the class, she found that she really loves the act of teaching and education as a whole. 鈥淭hrough these experiences I learned a lot about myself and my affection for teaching and instructing others,鈥 she said. The process left her with an even deeper appreciation of the faculty that she worked with at 红杏视频. 鈥淧rofessor Matteo, Professor Spirduso, and Professor Gardner taught me everything I know about art and design. They really shaped me into the artist I am today.鈥

Concept art from The Art of Nico del Mar, Ale Ortega-Romero鈥檚 thesis project centering the mundane aspects of the life of a young boy, Nico, the son of a fisherman, who lives on the fictional island of Vista Sol in the Caribbean.

Being named Trustee Scholar for the Illustration Department was probably the most meaningful accolade to bestow her. 鈥淎s an international student, it validated the time and efforts I have spent at 红杏视频.鈥 Ortega-Romero comes from the country of Panam谩 in Central America where, she says, studying art isn’t really encouraged. Being chosen meant that all the sacrifices she has made, coming here and working so hard, were worth it.

She credits her family for much of her success. 鈥淚 am the daughter of two extremely hard working, diligent, and dedicated parents who have unconditional love and support for me, which in turn made it possible for me to study what I love. For that reason I owe every achievement I’ve made so far to my loving family and have made it my mission to try my hardest during my time in 红杏视频. Likewise, this institution has gifted me with priceless knowledge and resources that have helped me all along.鈥

After graduation, Ortega-Romero plans to move to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a concept artist. In her parting words of appreciation to the College and her cohort she expressed, 鈥淎fter four years of studying illustration at Ringling and a year of studying animation at a different university, I hope that I can carry that same intensity and drive into my career as an artist. Coming from Panam谩 all the way to LA is not something I ever imagined doing without the support of my peers, faculty, and friends in 红杏视频.鈥

On Feb. 25, 红杏视频 students, faculty, and staff brought home 75 awards at the Golden ADDYs 2023 American Advertising Awards in Sarasota, FL.

The ADDYs 鈥 or the American Advertising Awards 鈥 is the industry鈥檚 largest and most widely recognized competition, with nearly 35,000 submissions yearly. The awards are given at three tiered stages: local, district, and finally national.

红杏视频 swept the local competition, as they have done many years prior. This year, Ringling students walked away with:

  • five Special Judge鈥檚 awards, including Best in Show
  • eight gold awards
  • 14 silver awards
  • 37 Palm awards

The 红杏视频 Design Center received:

  • two Judge鈥檚 Choice awards
  • the Amy Award for Best in Category
  • two Gold awards
  • three Silver awards
  • four Palm awards

Awards for the Design Center are an extra honor for 红杏视频 鈥 each project is contributed to by talented Ringling students who are mentored and overseen by an amazing group of professional, staff designers competing in the professional category. Located in the Larry R. Thompson Academic Center, 搁颈苍驳濒颈苍驳鈥檚 Design Center manages the development and design of a variety of print marketing, recruiting, and fundraising materials, from conceptualization to delivery. The design staff has extensive experience in graphic design and strives to achieve a consistent visual identity for 红杏视频.

In the Design Center, students get the chance to work on real projects from start to finish, brainstorming ideas, strategizing, managing budgets, and learning the details of planning and production. The Design Center creates award-winning projects each year, from campaigns, brand identities, posters, as well as the College’s recruitment materials. Director of Ringling Design Center Jennifer Mumford adds, 鈥淭he Design Center internship class offers students from any major a unique opportunity to work on design projects that will be used by the college, and for not-for-profit clients as well. Students earn class credit and gain the experience of working for a real client, and all the deadlines and expectations that come with it.鈥

A complete list of 红杏视频 awards is below.

红杏视频 students worked with the Design Center staff to create Career Insight 2023 packaging, branding, and print design. Career Insight is the college鈥檚 annual career and internship fair and is held each February.

FIRST ROUND: SUNCOAST ADDY AWARDS

CONGRATULATIONS Suncoast ADDY Winners of 2018!

Last Saturday, the winners were announced for the 4th District American Advertising Awards, hosted annually by the American Advertising Foundation. This year, 红杏视频 dominated the local student competition in various categories.

According to the : “Conducted annually by the American Advertising Federation (AAF), the local Ad Club phase is the first of a three-tier, national competition. Concurrently, all across the country, local entrants vie to win ADDY Awards – recognition as the very best in their markets. At the second tier, local ADDY winners compete against winners from other local clubs in one of 15 district competitions.
