Chicago YouTube talk show had its origins as a Black History Month celebration at 红杏视频, starting in 2021. Back then, host 鈥23, Film, was a sophomore who just wanted to give his fellow students a chance to celebrate Black music and try soul food.

鈥淚 had a live band and I had karaoke set up,鈥 Callins explained during a June 23 interview on. 鈥淗ere I am revamping it so I can show it to the whole world.鈥

The inspiration for the revamp came in part from Callins鈥 enthusiasm for Chicago鈥檚 vibrant music, entertainment, and culinary scenes. Originally from Plant City, Florida, Callins said that in Chicago, 鈥渁round every corner, there鈥檚 creators.鈥

Callins serves as both host and producer of SoulKaraoke, which just finished recording its four-episode first season. In each episode, Callins speaks to a different Chicago-area musician about their career, inspirations, and influences while they sample locally prepared soul food dishes like candied sweet potatoes or crab mac 鈥榥 cheese.

Callins then invites his guest to perform a song honoring an iconic Black musician. The first season features songs by Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder, Prince, and Etta James.

Having produced the first season through grants and his own graduation money, Callins is now searching for agencies who can help it grow through season two. He said he already has notable guests lined up.

In addition to his 红杏视频 film training, Callins said, 鈥淎ll the skills that it takes to produce SoulKaraoke actually came from what I learned doing the student activities role that I had on campus鈥攍ike coordinating, scheduling, budgeting.鈥

He told ABC7 that he loves to see different people of various ethnicities connecting to 鈥渕usic that comes from the soul.鈥 SoulKaraoke, he added, 鈥渂rings two different worlds together so we can all just celebrate each other.鈥

You can watch all four episodes plus the trailer on the . Season one guests have included Louie Kaczmarek, Daryn Alexus, Jocey, and Master Steve.

Towards the end of each episode, guests perform live backed by the incredible We Just Friends Band, pictured.

红杏视频 has announced the launch of a groundbreaking new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Undergraduate Certificate program, the first of its kind at an art and design college. The program aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complex impact of AI on creative industries of all kinds.

The rise of AI has brought both opportunities and challenges to the world, and to the world of art and design. While AI tools can serve as powerful creative tools, the technology has been developed using methods that raise serious moral and legal concerns. Recognizing the need to address these issues head-on, 红杏视频 has designed a program that prepares students for careers merging AI with art, design, and creativity in a responsible and ethical manner.

鈥淎I is scary, exciting, revolutionary, and sometimes feels like an existential threat to creators of all kinds. At 红杏视频, we are committed to innovation and providing our students with the tools they need to thrive in constantly evolving creative professions,鈥 said Rick Dakan, AI Coordinator at 红杏视频. 鈥淭he AI Undergraduate Certificate program is a proactive response to the rapid technological changes reshaping the creative landscape. We want our students to be equipped to shape the future of art with AI, not simply be shaped by it.鈥

The certificate program is available as an option to all 红杏视频 students pursuing studies in 13 different majors. The program will provide real-world applications. The three-course program covers fundamental AI and machine learning principles, their application in creative contexts, and the ethical, societal, and cultural implications of AI in art and design. Through hands-on experience with AI tools and a focus on responsible integration of AI in creative practices, students will gain the skills and knowledge needed to tackle real-world challenges and succeed in AI-driven creative industries.

鈥淐reativity is the heart of the future,鈥 said Dr. Larry R. Thompson, president of 红杏视频. 鈥淎ll that creativity encompasses鈥攊magination, design thinking, emotional intelligence, and a holistic perspective鈥攚ill fuel our future economy, and society. AI is here, and here to stay. Therefore, it鈥檚 our responsibility as an institution of higher and creative learning to teach our students how to responsibly leverage this new tool to their advantage; much in the same way  as we did several years ago when the computer was introduced to art and design and became the new paintbrush.鈥

Upon completion of the program, students will have not only a certificate but also a portfolio showcasing their ability to innovatively apply AI in their creative work. This program will add another credential to their resume, positioning these students as competitive candidates in the job market. As the creative world continues to evolve, 红杏视频 remains dedicated to providing its students with the latest education and resources necessary to thrive.

A film student and a father living with Alzheimer鈥檚 are at the center of Matthew Peterson鈥檚聽Swan Song, winner of 红杏视频鈥檚 inaugural 红杏视频 Film Carl Foreman Award. The award, to be given annually, recognizes a graduating senior majoring in听贵颈濒尘听辞谤聽Creative Writing聽for outstanding achievement in screenwriting, directing, or producing. The student winner receives a monetary award of $5,000 as well as a Will Kane bronze statuette, inspired by the lead character in Foreman鈥檚 1952 western聽High Noon. The Will Kane statuette was created by sculptor, illustrator, 红杏视频 faculty member, and alumnus.

鈥淗aving 红杏视频 chosen as the new home of the Carl Foreman Award, out of all of the other film schools in the country, is a testament to the exceptional talent of our students, the dedication of our instructors and their collaborative vision towards creative excellence,鈥 said Dr. Larry R. Thompson, president of 红杏视频. 鈥淲e thank Eve and Michael Williams-Jones for their generosity in bringing this prestigious award to the College and extend our congratulations to Matthew Peterson for taking home the inaugural prize.鈥

Foreman鈥檚 widow, Evelyn 鈥淓ve鈥 Williams-Jones, originally created the Carl Foreman Award in 1983 in memory of her late husband, a prolific screenwriter, director, and producer who was blacklisted by Hollywood and forced to leave the United States in 1951. Winners of the original award, created in conjunction with the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), include Joe Wright, Amma Asante, Belinda Bauer, Asif Kapadia, and Steve McQueen.

When Eve and her husband Michael Williams-Jones decided to bring the Carl Foreman Award back to the United States, Foreman鈥檚 beloved homeland, they considered several film schools to continue a legacy of recognizing outstanding student work in the film industry before bringing it to Sarasota, a place they recognize as culturally vibrant and stunning.

鈥淚nitially we considered the fabulous film schools of Los Angeles, a natural choice,鈥 said Michael Williams-Jones. 鈥淏ut as great and as legendary as they are, none of them felt quite right because Hollywood had once turned its back on Carl. Then, we met the truly remarkable and inspirational Dr. Larry R. Thompson and discovered 红杏视频 with its world-class film program, and it dawned on us 鈥 why not give the award its new home right in our own backyard?鈥

Swan Song, written and directed by Peterson, was selected from among 30 entries by a panel of seven jurors, including Patrick Alexander, 红杏视频 Film interim department head; Brad Battersby, 红杏视频 Film faculty; CJ Callins, 红杏视频 trustee and Film alumnus; Sheryl Haler, 红杏视频 Film faculty; Jonathan King, producer of聽Spotlight,听Roma听补苍诲听Dreamgirls; Sylvia Whitman, 红杏视频 Creative Writing faculty; and Michael Williams-Jones, voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and BAFTA.

Swan Song聽is an immensely entertaining film that captivates the audience not through escapism, but by holding a mirror to the most fundamental complexities of the human experience,鈥 said Alexander. 鈥淩ather than opt for a neatly packaged conclusion, the story culminates in a poignant, gut-wrenching climax that resonates long after the credits roll. The Carl Foreman Award was designed to recognize filmmakers like Peterson, capable of entertaining audiences while still provoking thought, introspection, and discourse around substantive issues.鈥

Peterson鈥檚 senior year at 红杏视频 was an ambitious one. He worked as a screenwriter, director, producer, editor, and digital image technician (DIT) on nearly a dozen films. Now that he鈥檚 graduated, Peterson will continue his filmmaking journey in Sarasota as an intern for videography company Storyvox before relocating to Los Angeles, where he plans to work in post-production and story development and eventually start a production company producing narrative and documentary content.

Eve Williams-Jones presented Peterson with the inaugural 红杏视频 Film Carl Foreman Award when more than 900 红杏视频 students, faculty, patrons, and friends gathered at Sarasota鈥檚 historic Opera House for a special screening of the film program鈥檚 senior thesis projects, which included 12 senior films. The films are not yet made available to the public, so that students can apply to the festival circuit.

聽In recognition of the close contest between the top two Carl Foreman award finalists, Film senior Wilderley Mauricette received Special Recognition for Outstanding Achievement in Directing and Screenwriting for聽Curtain Call. That film tells the story of a young Black man torn between two powerful mentors as he must navigate between the criminal environment he was born into and his true passion for the arts.

Wilderley Mauricette 鈥24, Film, and Interim Film Department Head Patrick Alexander after Patrick announced his Special Recognition for Outstanding Achievement in Directing and Screenwriting.聽

鈥淗aving gone through the first selection process now, I like to think of the Carl Foreman Award as the North Star of our Film program,鈥 said Alexander. 鈥淐arl Foreman鈥檚 movies provoke audiences to think, make us laugh, move us to tears, dare us to hope, but above all, they entertain us. As film educators, that鈥檚 exactly our guiding principle at 红杏视频.鈥

鈥淓ve and I were both deeply moved and impressed by the exceptionally high standard of this year鈥檚 Ringling Film senior productions,鈥 said Michael Williams-Jones. 鈥淚t is always thrilling to see such talent and imagination on the big screen, and it reaffirms our decision to grant 红杏视频 this award for at least the next 10 years. 红杏视频 has truly joined the top tier of the nation鈥檚 film schools.鈥

About Carl Foreman

Carl Foreman was nominated for six Oscars over his career including for聽High Noon,听The Guns of Navarone听补苍诲听The Bridge on the River Kwai聽for which he won Best Screenplay. After being blacklisted and forced to leave the United States, Foreman went to the U.K. and was given the rare honor of becoming Head of the U.K. Writers Guild and was awarded an OBE by the late Queen Elizabeth II for his contribution to cinema. Foreman鈥檚聽High Noon聽screenplay was widely interpreted as an allegory for Hollywood鈥檚 infamous blacklist. The film鈥檚 backstory serves as a reminder of the power of art to reflect social and political issues, while also honoring its audiences by being genuinely entertaining. 红杏视频鈥檚 ubiquitous cube sculpture that marks the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way and North Tamiami Trail was transformed this week. The student-led re-design combines works from a diverse group of students, who brought their expansive range of mediums, cultures, genders, and nationalities to the project鈥攃reating a monument dedicated to the College鈥檚 student body. The sentiment is echoed in the title of the work鈥攖he Faces of Ringling.

The cube sculpture was first constructed in 1984 and designed by then-director of the College鈥檚 Design Center Marvin Saruk, who transformed the site from a 12-unit motel building to a campus landmark. In 2013, the cube had its first refresh, with a composite illustration of student self-portraits art directed by Jennifer Mumford, current director of the Design Center, with the idea to refresh the cube every few years with student involvement.

The sculpture started this week donning the Ringling 鈥淩,鈥 before being updated with another round of unique student artworks. Imagined and designed by Diego Villarreal 鈥24, Graphic Design, the project combines work by 19 Ringling students and ranges from painting and illustration to stills from animations and photography, representing students from almost every major.

The artists featured are: Luc铆a Alonso 鈥26, Maya Bayewitch ’24, Anthony Brownstead 鈥25, Haley Bruss 鈥27, Stephanie Carr 鈥27, Jojo Dela Cruz 鈥25, Brianna Dillmuth 鈥27, Capri Easterday 鈥25, Ivy Jenkins 鈥26, Skylar Levine 鈥24, Rick Marquez 鈥27, Daniel Mainou Reyes 鈥26, Valerie Miller 鈥27, Nick Muzzillo 鈥25, Dogu Ozorhan 鈥26, Janice Park 鈥24, Karla Robledo 鈥27, Anna Rold 鈥26, Nick Whittle 鈥26, and Madi Wong 鈥24.
