Students from all over the country and across the globe traveled to Sarasota this summer to attend 红杏视频鈥檚 PreCollege program. From June 23-July 20, 179 students came from 12 countries outside the United States and 35 different states.

PreCollege gives college bound high school students a chance to work on their portfolios and to get a small taste of what it is like to attend an art college. They work with Ringling faculty and current 红杏视频 students who give them a glimpse of life at 红杏视频.

Students all participated in four core classes that make up the greater structure of Ringling鈥檚 majors: 2D Design, 3D Design, 4D Design, and Figure Drawing, for a total of 40 hours (10 hours each). In addition to the core classes, students have the opportunity to encounter more targeted immersions, which make up the bulk of their program. These immersions push students to explore mediums and methods that they haven鈥檛 experienced before.

PreCollege Program Director Nathan Skiles reflected, 鈥淚t鈥檚 always rewarding though to see students explore new avenues of art making and for them to discover new interests.鈥

Miniworkshops and immersions give students the opportunity to explore courses tied to all 13 of Ringling鈥檚 majors. Each student enrolls in two immersions, which range from Entertainment Design: Themed Environments to Film: Directing, and Fine Arts: Conceptual Practices, courses that mirror 红杏视频鈥檚 regular curricula, reduced to a four week timespan. Almost 50 percent of PreCollege attendees enroll at 红杏视频 to pursue their four-year degrees.

High school students aged 16-18 can apply to the 4-week summer residential program. Applications for PreCollege 2025 open on November 1, 2024. For information about the summer program, visit the PreCollege web page. Space and financial assistance are limited, and those interested are encouraged to apply early.

A Fort Lauderdale-area high school student turned heads with her video submission for a scholarship to the PreCollege program at 红杏视频. Talia Sverdik, currently attending Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, included the video as part of her application to the PreCollege Virtual Reality Immersion.

鈥淚 am blown away by Talia’s submission,鈥 said Joel and Gail Morganroth Endowed Department Head for Virtual Reality Department Head Martin Murphy. 鈥淗er passion for VR technology and its applications in healthcare is truly inspiring. Talia represents the future of immersive learning, and we are thrilled to have her as part of the PreCollege program this summer.鈥

showcased her technical skills while demonstrating a profound understanding of VR potential. It鈥檚 the latest in a series of impressive VR-related projects that she鈥檚 undertaken.

Sverdik, who said she learned VR platforms like Blender and Unity through YouTube tutorials, previously interned at a proton radiotherapy center, where she initiated a 3D animation of the proton beam machine in use. That animation was used to demonstrate the technology to patients and ultimately ease their fears and anxieties.

At Pine Crest School, she has led VR workshops for teachers and classmates alike. She鈥檚 also worked with friends and coaches to develop XR training modules for the school鈥檚 football team.

鈥淚鈥檓 excited to have the opportunity to delve into the world of Virtual and Augmented Reality this summer,鈥 said Sverdik. 鈥淚 want to level up my modeling and mixed reality capabilities to be able to produce professional level modeling, immersive user experiences, and to delve deeper into the VR training capabilities, to help lead the future of XR.鈥

The VR PreCollege Scholarship Competition aims to foster innovation and creativity in the next generation of VR developers by recognizing and supporting young talents who are interested in pushing the boundaries of the VR medium.

PreCollege is 红杏视频鈥檚 four-week summer residential program for high school students. The Summer 2024 program is still accepting applications through June 2. The program runs June 23-July 20. Applications for Summer 2025 will open in November and early application is advised.

Four members of the Sarasota Art Museum of 红杏视频鈥檚 2023-24 Teen Arts Council (SAM TAC) are set to take the next steps in their arts education. Marley Bean and Simon Orduno will attend 红杏视频 this fall, while Addy Hurt and Berkeley Maecker will participate in Ringling鈥檚 PreCollege program this summer.

SAM TAC is led by Dr. Brooks Tracey, artist and educator, and the Museum鈥檚 Community Catalyst for Learning and Engagement Connie Cuadrado. All of the students on the Council were local; Bean attending Booker High School; Orduno, Florida Virtual School and Suncoast Technical College; Hurt, Manatee School for the Arts, and Maecker, Booker High School.听

鈥淲e鈥檙e delighted that these students have decided to continue studying the arts, and to do so while staying right here in Sarasota,鈥 said Virginia Shearer, executive director of the Sarasota Art Museum. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a privilege to be a part of their cultural education, but of course they make valuable contributions to our organization and our community, too. Really, the Teen Arts Council is about forging long-term relationships with the next generation of arts leaders.鈥

Begun in 2022, the is a year-long paid internship program for creative high school students focusing on contemporary art, museum management, arts program development, and community engagement. TAC members receive behind-the-scenes immersion in Sarasota Art Museum operations and assist in planning public programming, among other opportunities.

The Kutya Major Foundation provides funds for TAC and supports its students with great potential who are interested in furthering their artistic education by offering scholarships to Ringling鈥檚 PreCollege program. The TAC is the brainchild of Flora Major, president of the Kutya Major Foundation and one of the founders who spearheaded the $22.5 million fundraising effort supporting the creation of the Sarasota Art Museum, a division of 红杏视频.

Both Maecker and Hurt will receive financial support from the foundation in order to attend Ringling鈥檚 four-week summer PreCollege program, which includes classes and workshops as well as Student and Resident Life activities. First-time students who successfully complete the program receive three college credits.

Update 7/31: See the PreCollege 2023 Recap

From mid-June to mid-July, 216 teens attended 红杏视频鈥檚 summer PreCollege program. For those four weeks, young artists lived on campus, ate at Cunniffe Commons鈥攖he College鈥檚 state-of-the-art dining hall and event space鈥攁nd totally immersed themselves in their art practices.

Students all participated in four core classes that make up the greater structure of Ringling鈥檚 majors: 2D Design, 3D Design, 4D Design, and Figure Drawing. In these foundational courses, students spend a total of 40 hours (10 hours each) throughout the program. In addition to the core classes, students have the opportunity to explore more targeted immersions, which make up the bulk of their program鈥48 class hours plus several required hours in open studios. The immersions give students the opportunity to explore courses that are tied to all 13 of Ringling鈥檚 majors. Each student enrolls in two immersions, which range from Entertainment Design: Themed Environments to Film: Directing, and Fine Arts: Conceptual Practices, giving them a glimpse into what it is like to attend art college, and what makes 红杏视频 so special. Almost 50 percent of PreCollege attendees enroll at 红杏视频 to pursue their four-year degrees.

红杏视频 President Dr. Larry R. Thompson puts a lot of stock in the PreCollege program. 鈥淎fter four weeks here, there鈥檚 no doubt that students will be better artists and designers,鈥 he said during the program orientation. 鈥淭hey will learn new skills, improve existing ones, and create incredible work for their portfolio. But, more importantly, they will walk away with a better sense of what they want to do with the rest of their lives. Maybe it鈥檚 art college鈥攎aybe it isn鈥檛. Either way, this is invaluable time spent learning new things and learning about themselves.鈥

This summer, students came from 32 domestic states plus Puerto Rico, and 11 countries:

  • Argentina
  • Austria
  • Brazil
  • Costa Rica听
  • Colombia
  • Honduras
  • Netherlands
  • Peru
  • Thailand
  • Turkey
  • Uruguay

High school students aged 16-18 can apply to the 4-week summer residential program on the 红杏视频 Main Campus.听

During the first week of classes, students taking the Fine Arts: Painting immersion were arranging monochromatic still-life compositions to enable them to hone their shading skills. In Eszter Sziksz鈥檚 Printmaking immersion, students layered monoprints and silkscreened prints to create a collage-like effect.听

Deeper into their courses, students taking the the Computer Animation immersion created scenes that included writing a 5-10 second story around an already constructed character of their choosing (they chose between a small mouse, and the protagonist from Qbert), then created, gave texture to, and well-considered lighting to all the objects in their characters鈥 worlds.听

Ringling Computer Animation faculty Matt Killian described the project as an abbreviated version of what the sophomore animators are working on. 鈥淎 lot of what they are doing is creative problem solving.鈥澨

PreCollege 2024 will be held on campus from June 23-July 20, 2024. For information about the summer program, visit the PreCollege web page. The application opens Nov. 1 each year. Space and financial assistance is limited and those interested are encouraged to apply early.

The 2022 PreCollege program came to a bittersweet end on Saturday, July 16. Culminating with closing exhibitions, a picnic, and an awards ceremony, the consensus among the students was hands down, four weeks well spent.

This year, the PreCollege program which took place from June 19-July 16, saw 235 high school students from 37 states and 11 countries, participate in the four-week, residential academic program. Students were able to choose from multiple immersions, ranging from Creative Writing for Comics and Games, to Virtual Reality Development, to Film Production, and took core foundation classes such as Figure Drawing and Painting.

Here鈥檚 what some of the PreCollege students had to say:

鈥淚’ve had such an amazing time, and I honestly don’t want to leave now that I know the program.鈥

鈥淭his program has been invaluable in giving me an idea of what college will be like, and it has shown me that I really enjoy 红杏视频 as a school.鈥

鈥淚t has helped me become more professional in my art, as well as make connections with other artists.鈥

鈥淭he value of the program is access to critique, feedback, and the technical expertise of the professors, as well as the opportunity to meet others with similar interests on a large scale.鈥

Dr. Larry R. Thompson, president of 红杏视频, addresses students and their families and friends at the closing ceremony on July 16.

鈥淵ou should all feel very proud of what you鈥檝e learned, and how you鈥檝e grown and adapted through this program,鈥 said Dr. Larry R. Thompson, president of 红杏视频, at the closing ceremony. 鈥淐ongratulations. You鈥檝e gotten a taste of what it鈥檚 like to attend one of the very best art colleges in the world 鈥 红杏视频. And, you got to experience our incredible faculty and staff and get a chance to work on the kind of  exciting projects Ringling students get to work on. You also saw what it takes to succeed and be a student at 红杏视频.鈥

鈥淲e hope that you all come back to us to continue your creative journeys. Your performance at PreCollege helped make you ready for us. And, we are ready for you.鈥

The Ringling PreCollege program is designed to give students a snapshot of what life is like as a Ringling student. The experience can help them make decisions about art school, while giving them the opportunity to create portfolios for admissions and learn more about their potential career paths.听

235 high school students from across the world have moved into a residence hall at 红杏视频 to participate in a four-week immersive PreCollege program.

From June 19-July 16, the group of 16- to 18-year-olds, who hail from 37 states and 11 countries, will experience the award-winning education that 红杏视频 is known for. This year鈥檚 in-person event follows two years of an exclusively online experience due to COVID-19. Attendance is at an all-time high, up 12.5% over 2019 when it was last held in person.

Each morning students will learn the fundamentals of art and design through hands-on instruction in a series of core classes. Each afternoon, they鈥檒l spend time in major-focused immersions specific to their interests, followed by dinner and open studio time. Studio time allows students to experiment and further develop their artistic practice and strengthen their portfolios for college admissions and scholarships.

鈥淧reCollege is one of the most amazing experiences a young artist can have. After four weeks here, you鈥檒l be a better artist, but more importantly, PreCollege will help you figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life,鈥 said 红杏视频 President Dr. Larry R. Thompson.

Some immersion classes include trips to local attractions, including Sarasota Jungle Gardens and Mote Marine Laboratory, where students will look at how the majors they are studying come to life through curated experiences, animation, and virtual reality, for example.

All of the courses are taught by Ringling鈥檚 award-winning faculty and each first-time student who successfully completes the program will receive three college credits.

On evenings and weekends, students are encouraged to participate in a variety of on- and off-campus excursions led by the College鈥檚 Student Life team, including social groups, e-tournaments, fitness activities, and community service projects.

PreCollege will wrap up with closing exhibitions on July 15 from 3:30-5 pm, followed by a family picnic from 4:30-6 pm. The closing ceremony will take place on July 16. For more information about how to apply for the 2023 program, visit the website.
