On January 17, the Brizdle-Schoenberg Special Collections Center in the Alfred R. Goldstein Library opened the Sketchbook Library exhibition. Featuring 60 sketchbooks by 红杏视频 students, Sketchbook Library invites viewers to flip through artists鈥 raw thoughts, as transcribed onto paper. The sketchbooks encompass a variety of mediums, styles, and subject matters by students across all majors.

红杏视频 students Muling Tzai 鈥26, Computer Animation, and Kiu Cheung 1鈥26, Motion Design, organized the show in collaboration with Special Collections Librarian and Archivist Cheri Marks. The exhibition was inspired by the two students’ shared passion for sketchbooks鈥攁 place for messy doodles and initial concepts that precede a finished work.

As objects taken on their own, the books tell non-linear stories about the places the students have been, the families they surround themselves with, and the mundane events and activities that are so relatable, like eating and washing hands. They monumentalize those small moments through their documentation.

Librarian Cheri Marks described the unique nature of the exhibit, 鈥淲hile our traditional setup involves works from the vault displayed in glass cases, the sketchbooks in this exhibit are laid out across tables in the Reading Room, inviting a more hands-on approach. This setup offers visitors an intimate experience, allowing them to explore each artist’s unfiltered thoughts, subjects, and personal stories as they turn the pages.鈥

The Sketchbook Library exhibition will be on view through February 14, 2025, in the Brizdle-Schoenberg Special Collections Center on the 2nd floor of the Alfred R. Goldstein Library.

Juneteenth, also known as 鈥淔reedom Day,鈥 鈥淟iberation Day,鈥 or 鈥淓mancipation Day鈥 and observed on June 19 every year, is the commemoration of the final, full emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. On June 19, 1865, the Union Army landed in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now free. This was actually two and a half full years after President Lincoln鈥檚 Emancipation Proclamation (1863), but it was not immediately implemented in places still under Confederate control, including Texas. The day became known as Juneteenth by the newly freed people in Texas.

In honor of the day, here are a number of events, resources, art, and art exhibitions to help you celebrate.

The Alfred R. Goldstein Library has an extensive collection of books about Juneteenth and anti-racism for visitors to explore. Their summer hours are Monday-Friday 8:30 am-4:30 pm, and closed on the weekends.

Art and resources at the Library

The Alfred R. Goldstein Library has physical and digital resources on Juneteenth and anti-racism. Explore their online or visit and check out their curated collection in person. Students, faculty, and staff can check out up to 40 books at one time.

On the second floor of Goldstein, visitors can explore the Brizdle-Schoenberg Special Collections Center鈥檚 collection of works on paper and art books that share the history of radical Black activism, from Kara Walker鈥檚 pop-up book, Freedom, a Fable, to Brooklyn-based Char Jer茅鈥檚 The periodic table of Black revolutionaries. Students, faculty, and staff can schedule a visit to explore the collection by using the signup form and selecting a 45-minute appointment.

On Wednesday, April 10, a group of almost 70 students from neighboring Booker High School visited the 红杏视频 campus to view a collection of busts made over spring break at the Forensic Sculpture Workshop. The visiting students were part of Booker鈥檚 Law Academy program and Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) Visual Arts program.

The exhibition attracted the attention of local teacher John Murtagh, a retired detective from the New York Police Department, who now runs the Booker Law Academy and teaches criminal justice. Murtagh heard about the workshop and the Forensic Facial Approximations exhibition on the news and thought it would be a great opportunity to show his students a unique and real-world investigation approach.

Regular community partner to the College, Booker鈥檚 Visual and Performing Arts-Visual Arts program joined the visiting group, led by instructors Steve Strenk and Cathy Janssen. For the visual arts group, the trip highlighted an overlooked application of the skills they are establishing in their studies.

Groups of six and seven spilled into the Special Collections reading room in the Alfred R. Goldstein Library to view the collection of sculptures鈥攃lay busts depicting cold case victims from Fort Myers and the Bronx, New York. The sculptures were made during a weeklong workshop hosted at the College and taught by Joe Mullins, a forensic imaging specialist. Over the course of the week, Mullins guided a group of students, alumni, faculty, and staff to transform 3D-printed replicas of skulls provided by the medical examiner鈥檚 office into a collection of depictive busts, bringing those victims back to life.

As they waited to enter the reading room, the students explored the window displays that explain the process and the science behind forensic sculpture.

Workshop attendees and 红杏视频 faculty Christina Hess, Dustin Juengel, and Alex Snyder, as well as 红杏视频 student workshop participants Noah Shadowens 鈥25, Illustration, Autumn McHoul 鈥24, Illustration, and Jules Pesce-DeFarrari 鈥25, Illustration, visited with the group and shared their experiences making the busts, anatomy lessons they learned, and the stories of the people whose busts they sculpted.

The students had many questions for the bust artists, from questions about the making process to the next steps in solving the mystery of the victims鈥 identities. The busts have had a busy life since their creation. After photographing the busts, Mullins sent those images to the medical examiner and Sheriff offices that provided the original skull scans. They will post and push out to the media as well. It takes only one person to say, 鈥業 know that person.鈥

Education Program Coordinator Diane Zorn, who organized the workshop and the visit said, 鈥淚t was fantastic to see the students respond to the sculpted busts and the process information. They actively engaged with the artists, asking questions about the process, and learning about how the muscle structure under the skin layer informs the shape of the face. Many were curious about how it felt to work on a piece of someone unknown. Their curiosity was inspiring. Many are now interested in taking life drawing classes to better understand anatomy.鈥

The forensic sculptures will be featured on CNN, where they will have a chance to reach a larger audience, and hopefully, get identified.

红杏视频 Liberal Arts faculty Dr. Genevieve Hill-Thomas contributed to a recently published tome on notable West African fashion designer 笔补迟丑茅鈥橭, who is famed for raising the global profile of traditional textiles like Burkina Faso鈥檚 faso dan fani.

Released in August 2023 in both English and French, 笔补迟丑茅鈥橭 includes an interview with the artist himself by Dr. Hill-Thomas, among contributions from other international authorities on African art and culture.

笔补迟丑茅鈥橭 was born in Burkina Faso and made his home in C么te d’Ivoire, where he has been a leader in promoting African-made products and fashions throughout the world. His recent collaborations included a piece inspired by Nelson Mandela for the Dior Cruise 2020 collection.

According to , Edition Patrick Frey, 鈥淭he book explores topics ranging from the fashion and textile industry to labour migration, cultural heritage, politics and showbiz, and spans an arc from the past to the present.鈥 A copy of the book, which is bound in African batik cloth, is currently available at 红杏视频鈥檚 Alfred R. Goldstein Library.

Said Dr. Hill-Thomas, 鈥淥ne of the things that I鈥檓 most proud of was that the creators of this book are working with artists to produce something that鈥檚 not solely an art book and not solely an academic text. You can feel it and you can understand it visually, and that history is there to contextualize that. So there鈥檚 no boundary between art and art history. Which is a great analogy for 红杏视频.鈥

Dr. Hill-Thomas, who grew up knitting and weaving Eastern European textiles with her Polish family, wrote her dissertation on the traditional Burkinab茅 cloth faso dan fani. She teaches the 红杏视频 Liberal Arts class, Fashion, Power, and Identity in Africa.

Experienced artisans A茂ssata Sylla and Halima Diagana, and their team of skilled women, have been 笔补迟丑茅鈥橭鈥檚 go-to dyers for many years. Treichville, Abidjan, 2019. Credit: Flurina Rothenberger

When she spoke with 笔补迟丑茅鈥橭 for the book in 2021, the two connected on topics like weaving and dying techniques. 鈥淏ecause we had both grown up with textiles, he was telling me a lot of information we don鈥檛 normally talk about in interviews,鈥 she said.

Liberal Arts courses at 红杏视频 are taught by artists and designers and developed specifically to inform the artwork and aid the development of emerging creatives. Courses explore myriad cultures, taboo ideas, psychology, science fiction, classical mythology, scientific theories, and so much more. Students enter discussions and question standing norms and emerge as artists and designers who are relevant, thoughtful, and original.

Genevieve Hill-Thomas holds a Ph.D. in the history of art from Indiana University, Bloomington.  Her dissertation, Faso Dan Fani: Marka Textiles in Burkina Faso, was supported by a Fulbright fellowship. An article based on this work, 鈥淪ilk in the Sahel: Tuntun and Marka Faso Dan Fani in Northwestern Burkina Faso,鈥 was published in the journal African Arts, and her latest essay on Burkinab猫 fashion and politics is included in the aforementioned book 笔补迟丑茅’翱. She is currently an art history professor in 红杏视频鈥檚 Liberal Arts Department as well as the College鈥檚 Fulbright Program Advisor. Her most recent work with combines her love of African art history with her background in nonprofit development, K-12 art education, and textile arts.

Students, faculty, and staff visiting the second floor of the Alfred R. Goldstein Library this month will have encountered the colorful depictions of nature featured in the window displays of the . Photographs of flora and fauna are transformed into sculptural objects, printed onto the familiar form of sun visors. The works read like an advertisement for nature with no intent on a financial return. They belong to the artist, researcher, theologian, social rights activist, and trial lawyer Jay Youngdahl. The exhibition marks the first from an artist or curator from outside the College community.

Originally from Little Rock, AR, Youngdahl has since lived all over the country, including Chicago, where he received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and most recently Oakland. As a trial lawyer, Youngdahl represented Navajo railroad workers in New Mexico. At 16 he was arrested as a union organizer in Louisiana. After moving to St. Petersburg, he became a regular visitor to the Special Collections Center and expressed an interest in getting involved. Digital Curation and Special Collections Librarian Janelle Rebel invited Youngdahl to propose an exhibition and a few months later the show was in the works.

A perfect fit for the Special Collections Library, The Mangroves of Masters Bayou applies Youngdahl鈥檚 research practice to the Florida wetland landscape. His process for the series began with observation of the site. Youngdahl, a recent transplant to St. Petersburg, regularly visited the Masters Bayou by kayak. Each visit to the location left him with new questions: where does the name come from; what is that green film covering the water 鈥 and is it a sign of doom; who has called this site home; and what can humans learn from the transactional relationships found in this natural setting 鈥 beyond the biological? Youngdahl took these questions to a series of experts whom he considers collaborators on this project.

Excerpts from The Mangroves of Masters Bayou zine.聽

Each question took Youngdahl down a research rabbit-hole. The film covering the surface of the water? Reading a book on the history of slime enlightened Youngdahl to some religious theories that humans originated from slime. The algae-like film Youngdahl discovered at the mangroves creates oxygen. This particular slime is responsible for transforming our planet into its current  oxygenated state, killing off whatever could not live with the gas. The name? Named after Joseph Masters, an early white settler in the region. The outcome of this research is translated into the sun visors (which are functional), glass drawings, a collection of artifacts (presumably found on the site), and a zine that distills the larger works into a small and singular object.

The Brizdle-Schoenberg Special Collections Center specializes in artists鈥 publication projects, prints, and illustrated rare books. They are supported by the 红杏视频 Library Association. Their pedagogy includes broadening the scope of materials one might engage with at a library. Visitors to the center will discover a range of books, printed materials, and primary sources from independent artist publishing 鈥 to historic objects 鈥 to prints from guest artists of the past. The collection is used by classes, groups, and individual researchers and is open to students, faculty, staff, and members of the public by appointment. Visitors can tell the librarians what specific books, art, or ephemera they are interested in viewing, or they can schedule a research consultation to discover materials in the collection.

*Note: The Alfred R. Goldstein Library is currently swipe-access only, accessible with a 红杏视频 ID. Members of the public can make an appointment to see the exhibition Monday-Friday.

The U.S. Department of State鈥檚 Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs named 红杏视频 a Fulbright Top Producing Institution for U.S. Students.聽This recognition is given to the U.S. colleges and universities that received the highest number of applicants selected for the 2022-23 Fulbright U.S. Student Program.聽

In spring 2022, one Ringling student and one alum were named as semi-finalists for the 2022-23 academic year. DeAnna Boyer 鈥22, Illustration, who was a senior at the time of her award, received a Fulbright U.S. Student Program award enhanced with a Fulbright-National Geographic Storytelling Fellowship. The Fulbright competition is administered at 红杏视频 by a committee; advisors include Amy Pettengill, director of International Student Affairs and Dr. Genevieve Hill-Thomas, professor of art history and Fulbright program advisor.

Boyer鈥檚 Fulbright year is currently taking place at the Burren College of Art in Ballyvaughan, Ireland and the National University of Ireland Galway where she will matriculate into the joint MA program in art and ecology. Her Fulbright project will include the creation of an illustrated book that seeks to connect the current culture and environment of Ireland to the historical stories and legends preserved through Celtic history.聽

The Fulbright competition is administered at 红杏视频 by a committee of advisors including Dr. Genevieve Hill-Thomas, liberal arts professor of art history and Fulbright program head, and Amy Pettengill, director of International Student Affairs.

红杏视频鈥檚 Fulbright success is due in part to its exceptional Liberal Arts (LA) program and faculty. Students work with LA faculty on their Fulbright applications and credit the variety and strength of curricula as crucial preparation for the process.

鈥淒r. Hill-Thomas works endlessly with all of our Fulbright applicants,鈥 said Liberal Arts Program Director Dr. Stephanie Seketa. 鈥淪he is an outstanding example of the kind of global scholar Ringling students get to work with as part of their Liberal Arts courses. We strive to not only educate and prepare students for the kind of global experiences the Fulbright Program offers, but to inspire them to have the courage to apply.鈥

鈥淥ur students and staff have benefited over the years not only from the Fulbright program but also from the rigorous application process itself,鈥 said Dr. Larry R. Thompson, president of 红杏视频. 鈥淭he Fulbright has served to foster significant international awareness among our domestic students, and we are pleased to have been acclaimed as a top producer of Fulbright scholars in the four-year special focus institution category.鈥

鈥淥n behalf of President Biden and Secretary of State Blinken, congratulations to the colleges and universities recognized as 2022-23 Fulbright Top Producing Institutions, and to all the applicants who were selected for the Fulbright Program this year,鈥 said Lee Satterfield, assistant secretary of state for Educational and Cultural Affairs.聽

鈥淭hanks to the visionary leadership of these institutions, administrators, and advisors, a new generation of Fulbrighters 鈥 changemakers, as I like to say 鈥 will catalyze lasting impact on their campus, in their communities, and around the world.鈥澛犅

Fulbright is the U.S. government鈥檚 flagship international educational exchange program.聽It is also among the largest and most diverse exchange programs in the world. Since its inception in 1946, more than 400,000 participants from all backgrounds and fields 鈥 including recent university graduates, teachers, scientists, researchers, artists, and others, from the United States and over 160 other countries 鈥 have participated in the Fulbright Program.聽

Fulbright alumni work to make a positive impact on their communities, sectors, and the world and have included 41 heads of state or government, 62 Nobel Laureates, 89 Pulitzer Prize winners, 78 MacArthur Fellows, and countless leaders and changemakers who carry forward the Fulbright mission of enhancing mutual understanding.聽聽

红杏视频鈥檚 Galleries and Exhibitions held its first Art Walk of the new year on Friday, Jan. 20. Over 950 visitors crowded into galleries across the campus, enjoyed dinner on the lawn with a meal from the food trucks, participated in an interactive art performance, and watched a live band.

Lost Summer, an exhibition of large and small scale landscape paintings by Ringling alumni Lee Mayer 鈥72, Commercial Art, filled the Patricia Thompson Alumni and Skylight Galleries. For the Brizdle-Schoenberg Special Collections curated selection of humorous books, Just the Funny Stuff, Digital Curation and Special Collections Librarian Janelle Rebel offered her top ten humorous picks.

Storyteller and author Larry Littany Litt gave a reading, performance, and interactive prompt to an audience in the Carol Camiener Plaza. Reading from his book, Mad Monk Improper Parables: Wit, Wisdom, Humor, Laughter and Practical Advice, Litt offered all of the above in a performance that mixed passages from his writing with off the cuff conversation. His performance culminated in an invitation for members of the audience to join him in a symbolic burning of printed tokens. Participants waved the printed sheets over a decorative fire, a fan- blown fabric artifice lit from below, before tearing the page up and throwing the pieces in the cauldron. The ritual was the perfect mix of halloween store decor, sincere intention, and self-deprecating humor, to keep the audience committed.

At Go Figure! The Figure Enhancement Workshop, in the Selby Foundations Gallery, framed figure drawings by Ringling students were up for sale to take home on the spot, with gallery attendants acting as auctioneers. The sales were part of a fundraiser to raise money for The Figure Enhancement Workshop, known as FEWs, a student-run and student-funded life drawing studio program at 红杏视频. As part of the programming for the fundraiser, ongoing and informal life drawing classes took place throughout the evening. Students and visitors alike sharpened their skills as onlookers observed.

Highlights from the first Art Walk of 2023

A curated selection of the Basch Glass Art collection, Circles and Spheres, was on view at the Richard and Barbara Basch Gallery in the Larry R. Thompson Academic Center. An exhibition of junior and senior year photography work, Chimeras, was on display on the second floor of the Cooley Center, and student design work for a cause was on display, with items for sale, in Design Activism Hub and a Plate for All: Combating Food Insecurity and Food Waste at the Lois and David Stulberg Gallery. And, an Untitled exhibition of colorful, mixed media artworks was on view at the Crossley Gallery.

To end the night, a live performance by St. Petersburg-based psychedelic post-punk band Liquid Pennies injected some energy into the closing hour of the Art Walk. The show was enjoyed by an eclectic audience of students, families, and retirees, and offered a convivial last note to the evening, with art goers lingering for a pause on their way home.

The next Art Walk will be held Feb. 24 and promises another evening of exceptional art, experiences, and fun. Art Walk is free and open to the public, and one of many ways 红杏视频 engages the Sarasota community. For more information, visit the 红杏视频 Galleries and Exhibitions website.

Local seventeen-year-old Robert Brady is making a powerful impact on the community as he earns the honor of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America.

As part of the requirement for all who are seeking the Eagle Scout rank, scouts must complete a project that benefits their community and/or a not-for-profit. For his final project, Brady decided to hand-build a self-contained local library out of cedar. This free library is now installed on the corner of 25th Street and Cocoanut Avenue, which borders the 红杏视频 campus property and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Day Park on the edge of the Newtown community.

The library will be continuously filled with books donated by 红杏视频鈥檚 Goldstein Library; books that feature different artists, art histories, design, books on architecture, video games, and so much more. The books are free and available to everyone in the community, enabling creative and educational resources for all.

On Saturday, August 27, 2022, the Little Free Library was installed and unveiled. Dr. Larry Thompson, president of 红杏视频, as well as multiple faculty and staff members, and Ringling students have also achieved the honor of Eagle Scout and share in the celebration of his achievements.
