红杏视频 is proud to launch a series of programs in celebration of its first-ever First-Generation College Student community, honoring the achievements and experiences of those who are the first in their families to pursue a college degree. In August, the College was selected as one of sixty new members of the FirstGen Forward Network for demonstrating a commitment to improving experiences and advancing success for first-generation college students.

鈥淏eing selected as a FirstGen Forward Network Member is both an honor and a call to action,鈥 said Dr. Kevin Kruger, interim president and CEO of FirstGen Forward.

鈥満煨邮悠 joins a growing movement of institutions and professionals who are committed to advancing access, sharing best practices, and driving systemic change to ensure first-generation students succeed. We look forward to seeing 红杏视频 and the entire Class of 2025 make a lasting impact,鈥 Kruger shared.

Ringling Firsts, an on-campus organization supporting and celebrating first-generation college students, will mark its inaugural First-Generation College Student Day with a celebration event on Scott Plaza on November 3. Then, on November 5, a catered social luncheon for both students and faculty will feature a panel of first-generation students sharing their experiences. (More information below.)

Additionally, the upcoming Faculty Professional Day on October 14 will be exclusively focused on first-generation students, their experiences, and ways to empower and facilitate their success.

The events serve to highlight the College鈥檚 continued efforts to nurture first-generation students, who make up more than 40% of the school鈥檚 enrollment. 红杏视频 was recently accepted into FirstGen Forward, a network of nearly 500 higher education institutions nationwide that are committed to understanding first-generation student success and building more inclusive systems.

鈥淲e are so excited to join the FirstGen Forward Network,鈥 said Dr. El莽in Haskollar, Associate Dean of Students and the director of the Center for Student Success.

鈥淏eing a part of this national community of colleges and universities supporting first-generation students not only affirms the work we are doing at 红杏视频, but also connects us with other institutions, helping us make informed decisions based on data, research, and best practices.”

“Through Ringling Firsts, we continue to build supportive programs and celebrate our first-generation students, so every student can thrive and feel empowered,鈥 Dr. Haskollar shared.

The newly founded Ringling Firsts organization fosters an in-person and online community, while also offering specialized mental health services and staff and faculty development programs, including specialized DEEP Professional Development Certificate workshops.聽

Cross-major film collaboration addresses intergenerational trauma and struggles of Black America /news/021725-mamastrauma/ Mon, 17 Feb 2025 16:51:25 +0000 /?p=52188 Maya Battle 鈥27, Business of Art and Design, first wrote the poem Mama鈥檚 Trauma after watching the tragedies surrounding Breonna Taylor and George Floyd’s deaths unfold in 2020. Maya Battle 鈥27, Business of Art and Design, first wrote the poem Mama鈥檚 Trauma after watching the tragedies surrounding Breonna Taylor and George Floyd’s deaths unfold in 2020. The poem describes intergenerational trauma and collapses the illusion of some great separation of time between slavery, Jim Crow, redlining, and the hypocrisy and double standards that exist within the legal system today. Battle said, 鈥淎t its core, Mama鈥檚 Trauma is my demand for people to listen, to acknowledge, and to understand that this isn鈥檛 just history鈥攖his is now. The struggles of our ancestors still shape our reality today.鈥

Battle always knew she wanted to turn this poem into a film in some way. She said, 鈥淚 was tired of seeing these conversations sugarcoated. No one was saying it authentically, so I did. This is the reality of Black America鈥攖he trauma, the history, the double standards鈥攁nd I refuse to package it in a way that makes it easier for people to digest. If it makes you uncomfortable, good. It should.”

After meeting 红杏视频 Film majors Sean Jenkins 鈥28 and Sebastien Vaughn 鈥28, she found like-minded collaborators and cultural resonance. The three quickly became a trio and collaborated on the film adaptation of Mama鈥檚 Trauma

Each of the three collaborators brought something unique to the project. It was directed and written by Battle, produced by Jenkins, with cinematography by Vaughn. Jenkins shared about the process, “I think being able to collaborate with the two of them allowed for everyone to shine in their respective roles鈥攚hich is another thing, too, that we’re also good friends outside of the project. It was a learning curve moving into a professional space, but there was great communication throughout… our workflow was almost seamless.鈥

The film will be screened in The Art Showcase, which opens today at Crossley Gallery. The exhibition, organized by the Black Student Union in collaboration with the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, will be on view from Feb. 17-22.

Each year, 红杏视频 Galleries and Exhibitions Director and Chief Curator Tim Jaeger teaches a Business of Art and Design class on exhibition design and management that explores the complexity of curating exhibitions and programming. The class organizes a public exhibition in one of the campus galleries. Students are divided into different teams to tackle different areas of the larger project of mounting an exhibition鈥攁 design team, an event team, curators, and marketing. The students work collaboratively and they work hard.

This year, the ambitious students of the Business class organized two exhibitions simultaneously: Jack Davis: Legacy of Laughter, a retrospective of drawings and ephemera featuring the widely recognizable, if not infamous, works by the Mad magazine cartoonist, and Nothing New: Archives of Affection, a historic collection of daguerreotypes of male couples from the early and mid-19th century.

Located in the Willis Smith Gallery,聽Archives of Affection聽presents 300 tiny portraits of queer love in a dimly lit, soft pink, painted gallery full of cozy furniture and offering an intimate atmosphere. The museological setting situates the portraits not in a cozy, intimate space of the era of their making but in a contemporary home, as if they were cherished portraits of family members or queer ancestors who paved the way for future gay and trans folks to experience loving relationships. Visitors to the exhibition can literally put themselves in the shoes of the portrayed couples via an AI projection that transforms participants into tin-type characters.聽

Peter Enrico and Terry Stache generously shared their collection with the College for the exhibition. The collection started when Enrico stumbled upon a photograph in a bin at an antique shop in the 1980s and then continued collecting them for 20 years until it had grown to 400 or 500 photos. The portraits lived in a suitcase in his closet for decades before being brought into the light for Archives of Affection

The Fall 2024 Exhibition Design and Management team.

The Business of Art and Design course offers an opportunity for students to experience real work while still in school. They can put the exhibition on their resume, plus they have worked through issues and complications that come up while in the supportive company of their peers and faculty. Throughout the semester, professionals working in each of the four roles performed by the students give talks and answer pointed questions that range from blue sky and philosophical to advice for minute and detailed situations.聽

This course offered more than its usual practical support. Putting on this exhibition meant a lot to a group of queer and 鈥榦thered鈥 students. Kelsey Knight 鈥24, Visual Studies, was part of the design team that organized the exhibition. Knight described the relief they found in arriving at 红杏视频 and how much this exhibition meant to them.聽

鈥淭his exhibit and the story, I think people need to hear about this and see it. I鈥檓 a part of the LGBTQ+ community, and it means a lot to see my brothers and sisters from the past and see that we鈥檝e been here all along. I grew up in a small-minded community in Georgia. From childhood people let me know I was different. It was rough not being understood. Coming to 红杏视频鈥攊t鈥檚 been really nice being understood and feeling safe.鈥

See the exhibition at the next Art Walk event on Friday, January 17, from 5-8 pm.

The event is free and open to the public. In-person viewings are free and open to the public Tuesday-Saturday, 10 am-4 pm, and by appointment.

This exhibition is sponsored by The Community Foundation of Sarasota County, The Exchange, and WUSF.  Special thanks to Pamela and Richard Mones for generously supporting the 红杏视频 Exhibition Design and Management Class and this exhibition.

It offers an opportunity for two unlikely groups to spend time together. Veterans, who may never have stepped foot in an art gallery or gotten to know an art student鈥攁nd the art student who might otherwise have no reason to get to know a veteran鈥攕hare the meaningful experience.

These works narrate tales that span the battlefields of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan to the steadfast resolve of current enlisted troops. The artists humanize the narratives of these conflicts, encapsulating their profound significance for our service men and women.

Veterans and students mingled at the opening for the War Paint exhibition.

Celebrating the exhibition鈥檚 sixth year, the College takes immense pride in unveiling this year鈥檚 installment of . This year鈥檚 theme of the Greatest Generation highlights the experiences of the military who were active during the Great Depression, their roles in World War II, and their contributions to post-war rebuilding.

Juneteenth, also known as 鈥淔reedom Day,鈥 鈥淟iberation Day,鈥 or 鈥淓mancipation Day鈥 and observed on June 19 every year, is the commemoration of the final, full emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. On June 19, 1865, the Union Army landed in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now free. This was actually two and a half full years after President Lincoln鈥檚 Emancipation Proclamation (1863), but it was not immediately implemented in places still under Confederate control, including Texas. The day became known as Juneteenth by the newly freed people in Texas.

In honor of the day, here are a number of events, resources, art, and art exhibitions to help you celebrate.

The Alfred R. Goldstein Library has an extensive collection of books about Juneteenth and anti-racism for visitors to explore. Their summer hours are Monday-Friday 8:30 am-4:30 pm, and closed on the weekends.

Art and resources at the Library

The Alfred R. Goldstein Library has physical and digital resources on Juneteenth and anti-racism. Explore their online or visit and check out their curated collection in person. Students, faculty, and staff can check out up to 40 books at one time.

On the second floor of Goldstein, visitors can explore the Brizdle-Schoenberg Special Collections Center鈥檚 collection of works on paper and art books that share the history of radical Black activism, from Kara Walker鈥檚 pop-up book, Freedom, a Fable, to Brooklyn-based Char Jer茅鈥檚 The periodic table of Black revolutionaries. 2SLGBTQIA+ Pride spans campus and calendar /news/060324-junepride/ Mon, 03 Jun 2024 13:42:33 +0000 https://staging-ringlingmainsite.kinsta.cloud/?p=43257 The post 2SLGBTQIA+ Pride spans campus and calendar appeared first on 红杏视频.

Throughout the year, 红杏视频 celebrates its 2SLGBTQIA+ community with programs and initiatives鈥攆rom the History of Pride in October to the Second Chance Prom in April. As the campus sits silent and empty of all its students during the nationally-recognized Pride Month in June, here is a look back at some of the highlights from the last school year, and a glimpse at what鈥檚 to come in the 2024-25 academic year.

红杏视频 dedicates the month of October to pride activities, so students are on campus to participate. October was established as LGBTQ+ History Month to commemorate the history of LGBTQ+ people and their rights, especially in academia, and create an opportunity to celebrate Pride during the academic year. The month also coincides with National Coming Out Day on October 11. In 2023, 红杏视频鈥檚 Center for Diversity and Inclusion programmed a series of events and educational opportunities, in addition to the year-round educational opportunities of their Lunch and Learn series.

The goal of these programs is to offer safe and brave spaces for queer and trans communities鈥攃ommunities that are too often the targets of violence and oppression. In higher ed, these students are sometimes met with concerning levels of discrimination, harassment, lack of visibility, and limited access to support services. Ringling students working with the CDI and members of the Student Government Association, with help from the campus鈥 Peterson Counseling Center and Community Engaged Learning department, have organized many events and programs to create opportunities for 2SLGBTQIA+ visibility, connection, and support鈥攚here students can find their people and find themselves.

Campus initiatives create a climate of care and visibility

On National Coming Out Day, the College hosted Planned Parenthood at the Peterson Counseling Center, in a relaxed and fun event where students could ask questions about sexual health and gender-affirming care while playing with puppies and making buttons.

CDI also threw a Queer Dialogue event in Scott Plaza, inviting students to share their stories while making s鈥檓ores around a campfire. Later that month, they hosted a lunchtime talk on gender and sexuality led by Ringling faculty Dr. Iva Petkova, coordinator and educator for the Gender and Sexuality minor.

To end the 2023-324 academic year, students cut loose at the Second Chance Prom, a redo and reimagining of the culminating event of high school. In the week leading up to the prom, CDI and Student Life transformed the College鈥檚 Queer Closet into a Prom Boutique, full of donated classic and alternative prom clothing and accessories, available to all students. Queer Closet is open throughout the school year and stocked with donated clothing as a free resource to match students鈥 gender identities and ultimately create an affirming experience for all genders and bodies. The under-the-sea-themed prom was sponsored by Project Pride and featured DJ Branna Lee, who started out as a drag DJ. CDI also hosted a Pride Block Party on campus in April.

Student Outreach Coordinator at the Center for Diversity and Inclusion Zeta Bengoechea described the evening, 鈥淎ll students felt welcomed and had a memorable evening. The decorations, music, and overall atmosphere were perfectly orchestrated to fit this year鈥檚 theme, Under the Sea. A large screen played marine life videos, there were mocktails with sea-inspired decorations, and jellyfish hanging from the ceiling. There was also a photo booth with props, and many students wore outfits from the Queer Closet Prom Boutique, which was fantastic. It was wonderful to see everyone having such a great time!鈥

Next year, the CDI is coordinating with local Drag Queens for an event on October 24 in the Diane Roskamp Exhibition Hall. Plans are also underway for an Out and Proud Showcase on October 9, from 3:30-5 pm on the first floor of the Alfred R. Goldstein Library, during Out at Ringling Week. The showcase aims to provide a platform for 2SLGBTQIA+ students to exhibit art that celebrates their sexual orientation and gender identity.

Collaborating with visiting artist

Belgian artist Lieven De Boeck collaborated with Ringling students over the fall semester, creating costumes for a queer parade, What鈥檚 Going on?, celebrating queer identity and visibility. The group performed the parade at Sarasota Art Museum, before traveling to Miami to perform at Untitled Art Fair during Art Basel week.

听2厂尝骋叠罢蚕滨础+ history highlighted in Liberal Arts courses

红杏视频鈥檚 Liberal Arts Program offers several courses on LGBTQ+ history and culture each year. In Fall 2022, they offered LGBTQ+ Identities in Film & Literature: Queer Comics, which explored the cultural significance of queer comics as a form of activism from the late 1950s to the present day. Last fall they offered LGBTQ+ Activism, exploring moments of personal and group activism, advocacy, and change-making, with special attention to how legal, medical, popular culture, and other discourses supported or stymied progress, and how race, socioeconomic class, age, religion, and other axes of identity inflect LGBTQ+ identities and activism. Also this fall, Liberal Arts will offer the special topics course Mighty Real: The Histories and Controversies of Drag and an art history seminar, the History of Queer Animation.

红杏视频 is a diverse community comprised of beliefs and backgrounds from every corner of the world, with students hailing from nearly 60 countries and almost every U.S. state. The institution celebrates academic freedoms and personal identities and expressions. And you are welcome here.

On March 22, 2024 at 7 pm, 红杏视频 and their Center for Diversity and Inclusion will host the first-annual Women of Industry event. The panel, initially inspired by Women鈥檚 History Month, will feature a number of women working in the themed entertainment industry. Each year, the panel will focus on a different creative industry.

This women-focused discussion will touch on the unique opportunities and challenges for women in the Themed Entertainment Industry. Eight panelists will share their professional and

personal experiences about working in a male-dominated profession and talk about the evolution of women leadership.

鈥淎 while back, Ringling鈥檚 Associate Dean of Students for Diversity and Inclusion, Dr. El莽in Haskollar, asked me about the current issues surrounding DEI right now in Entertainment Design,鈥 said Jamie DeRuyter, Entertainment Design department head at 红杏视频.

鈥淚 immediately thought of the lack of equality for women in the industry. With roughly 80 percent of Entertainment Design students currently identifying as women, we need to prepare these young and aspiring professionals to take on this male-dominated industry. Hopefully, with this many women entering the field, they can tip the scales and make a real difference in the work culture.鈥

Debra Wren of Wrenhouse Design has enjoyed a 30-plus-year career working in themed entertainment. 鈥淎lthough there has been a big shift in how women are perceived in this industry during my career, there is still work to be done,鈥 she said.

鈥淭his is especially true when working 鈥榠n the field鈥欌攐n construction sites, in fabrication shops, etc.鈥攚here it still tends to be very male-dominated. It鈥檚 important to also recognize that location plays a big part in this level of acceptance of women also. There are significant cultural factors that play into women鈥檚 roles across the industry.鈥

The Women of Industry panel will take place in the Roskamp Exhibition Hall on 红杏视频鈥檚 Main Campus. It is open to students, faculty, staff, and the general public are encouraged to attend. Admission is free.

Entertainment Design is the art of creating compelling and engaging experiences that translate a narrative, concept, or theme into a real-world experience that resonates with guests. 红杏视频鈥檚 Entertainment Design major teaches students to collaborate with artists, designers, and other creatives to bring their visions to life, and develop the visual communication skills of an artist and the problem solving skills of a designer. With a focus on the built environment, artistic and technical skills are applied to project designs for theme parks, museums and exhibitions, concerts, sporting events, expos, hotels and restaurants, retail spaces, and more for an industry expanding worldwide. In this program, students learn how to be effective designers and collaborators within teams that work on creative projects across all kinds of entertainment experiences.

This woman-focused discussion will touch on the unique opportunities and challenges for women in the Themed Entertainment Industry.

Rising Together, a new podcast on the art and design of inclusion launches today, produced at 红杏视频. The podcast spotlights the transformative power of art and design in shaping inclusive spaces, communities, and mindsets. In each episode, co-hosts El耀in Haskollar, Ph.D. and Curtis Anderson invite special guests, from community leaders to everyday heroes, who share their journeys personal narratives, and insights on how to create change.

Co-producer and co-host El耀in Haskollar, Ph.D. is the Associate Dean of Students for Diversity and Director of Ringling鈥檚 Center for Diversity and Inclusion. She is an award-winning higher education leader whose past experiences include providing strategic direction to student affairs offices, programs, and services on the foundations of cross-cultural understanding, and strategizing and implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion-focused initiatives for institutions of higher education.

Her co-producer and co-host Curtis Anderson is the Assistant Dean of Admissions for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. He is a photographer whose select exhibitions include The Story I鈥檒l Tell: The Mixtape (2021), and The Wonder in The Wild (2023).

They are joined by Nick Palladino, an award-winning and internationally recognized sound designer and the founder of NPALL Audio; sound designer and location audio engineer Troy Logan 鈥22, Film, an award-winning, Sarasota-based sound designer and location audio engineer; post-production from Keith Elliott, a seasoned veteran of mixing, mastering, and cutting-edge software architecture; and Director of ART Network and Senior Production Manager Marquee Doyle, an award-winning director and editor who specializes in documentaries and short films, with over 21 years of experience. The podcast was recorded for both audio and video and mixed at 红杏视频鈥檚 Studio Labs鈥 state-of-the-art post-production facility.

For their first thought-provoking discussion, they have invited Nate Jacobs, who is the founder and artistic director of the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe. Jacobs generously shares the story of the birth of the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe鈥攊nspired by his time performing the part of servants and other like characters in supporting roles at the Asolo Repertory Theatre. That diminished representation encouraged Jacobs to create a theatre that would feature all Black casts telling stories that speak to, invite, and feel inclusive to Black audiences. Jacobs has written, composed, directed, and performed in many shows, as an actor, singer, dancer, and comedian. He trains and mentors youth in the performing arts through programs such as Stage of Discovery, WBTT鈥檚 summer musical theatre intensive program.
