红杏视频 officially opened the new multi-use Hammond Studios last month. The mixed-use building features classrooms and facilities for metalworking, mold making and casting, as well as sewing and textile work. It is part of the College鈥檚 Makerspace fabrication shops.

The building was the College鈥檚 first official dining hall. It had a capacity of 184 people and opened in 1990. In 1991, it was officially designated Hammond Commons.

This building鈥檚 namesake, Alice Hammond, was a member of the College鈥檚 Board of Trustees. In addition to Hammond Commons, Hammond made another generous donation and had a residence hall named in her honor.

The new facility will be an integral space for the Fine Arts department and its students, as well as students from any major.

鈥淥ne of the things we were really intentional about when designing this space was having specialized studios that are tailored to the needs of each discipline, in addition to more communal spaces like classrooms,鈥 said Noah Coleman, who oversees the Makerspace as the Visual Art Center Studio Manager and Technician. 鈥淪o there are these social areas like the classroom and bench room, plus our more specialized areas for metalworking, mold making, and sewing.鈥

The Sewing Studio has facilities for cutting, pressing, and sewing fabric, as well as weaving, crochet, and embroidery. Open to all students, it fills a strongly felt need for textile workspaces on campus. It is the home of the first costume construction course at the College.

The Mold Making Studio provides facilities for working with a range of materials, including plaster, alginate, silicone, urethane, and many other commonly used materials in mold making. The Metal Fabrication Studio is equipped with all the necessary tools to bend, shape, join, grind, and form metal.

鈥淭hese areas, combined with our existing studios for wood, glass, digital fabrication, and letterpress, really round out the facilities that the Makerspace offers to the Ringling community,鈥 Coleman shared.

The Makerspace also features the Wood Shop, the Letterpress and Book Arts Studio, the Digital Fabrication Studio, and the Glass Studio, all housed within the Basch Visual Arts Center. Explore all of the Makerspace Studios and facilities on their .

With the start of the fall semester on August 18, 红杏视频 will launch three new innovative undergraduate certificate programs designed to equip students with cutting-edge skills for today鈥檚 creative industries. The new programs鈥擟reative Entrepreneurship, Professional Lighting, and Virtual Production鈥攐ffer specialized training and hands-on experience with beyond-industry-standard tools, techniques, and workflows, empowering students to thrive in rapidly changing and highly competitive fields across the entertainment, media, and design sectors.

The Creative Entrepreneurship Undergraduate Certificate empowers artists and designers to apply entrepreneurial thinking and business acumen, equipping them with the entrepreneurial mindset and business strategies needed to launch, grow, or contribute to creative ventures. Designed for students seeking to shape their own professional paths in the rapidly evolving creative economy, the program supports a range of career goals, from building a freelance practice to starting a business or innovating within an existing company.

Through a focused three-course curricular pathway, students gain a foundation in entrepreneurship tailored specifically to the creative industries. Coursework emphasizes language, tools, strategic thinking, and market awareness, enabling students to identify opportunities, respond to trends, and develop sustainable business models. The certificate culminates in a final project that reflects their creative vision with a strong grasp of branding, planning, and entrepreneurial execution.

The Professional Lighting Undergraduate Certificate equips students with the technical skills and conceptual knowledge needed to apply professional lighting techniques across creative industries, including photography and cinematography. The program explores how light, shadow, and contrast can be used to create volume and depth in two-dimensional media. Students gain insight into the physics of light, including the inverse square law, reflection, and contrast ratios, while learning to apply lighting techniques to a range of subject matter in a controlled studio environment.

Throughout the program, students work hands-on with professional lighting equipment and studio tools, follow a digital color-managed workflow, and develop best practices for health and safety in a studio setting. Upon completion, they will produce a digital portfolio showcasing a progression from foundational to advanced lighting techniques鈥攑reparing them to enter creative fields such as commercial, editorial, product, or portrait photography, as well as cinematography, with a competitive edge and a professional body of work.

The Virtual Production Undergraduate Certificate provides students with a comprehensive education at the intersection of traditional filmmaking and cutting-edge digital technology. This program introduces learners to the rapidly evolving field of virtual production, combining practical film production skills with real-time game engine technology to prepare them for innovative roles within the entertainment industry.

Students gain hands-on experience working with advanced tools such as state-of-the-art LED wall technology and real-time rendering software, learning virtual production workflows that are reshaping how films and media are created. By bridging traditional techniques with emerging digital processes, the certificate equips students to contribute confidently to projects that blend physical and virtual elements in today鈥檚 entertainment landscape.

These certificates open exciting pathways for students to build meaningful careers at the forefront of creativity and technology. Read more about all of our undergraduate certificate programs on our website.

红杏视频 is proud to launch a new Environmental Studies minor in response to growing global environmental challenges and increasing student interest in sustainability. The minor will offer students from all majors the opportunity to explore the complex relationship between humans and the natural world, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to drive meaningful environmental change in their communities and careers.

The minor was launched this semester, and two graduating seniors who had taken enough qualifying courses before the minor was established were able to claim it.

Sky Lee 鈥25, Visual Studies, is one of the few students who could claim the minor in time for graduation this year. Lee described his growing interests in environmental studies that predated the minor, 鈥淓ven before officially pursuing the minor, I naturally found myself drawn to environmental courses. As I worked toward the minor, I deepened my understanding of large-scale and local ecological issues.鈥

For Theo Bell’s senior thesis, they created a book called Our Reefs. The book takes the reader through the basics of life in coral reefs, an ecosystem that is important not only to the environment but also to many cultures and settlements worldwide.

For graduating senior Theo Bell 鈥25, Illustration, their environmental studies had already begun before they entered college:

鈥淚 have always been a big fan of science. By the age of five, I was telling people I wanted to be a herpetologist. During the pandemic, when I was in my junior year of high school, I spent all of my free time drawing and either watching National Geographic, PBS Eons, Animal Planet, or documentaries like Oceans and Crimson Wing. I knew I was either going into Marine Biology or Illustration. Ultimately, I decided on Illustration. The Environmental Studies minor was a perfect fusion of some of the things I love the most鈥攁rt and science.鈥澛

Bell plans to work as an artist for zoos and aquariums after graduation.

Liberal Arts faculty member Tim Rumage gives a lesson out in the field.

To qualify for the Environmental Studies minor, students must take the Environmental Science course, which examines ecological systems and current environmental issues, plus four Environmental Studies electives. The electives span topics from the general, such as Sustainability, to deep dives on social behaviors in the Environmental Ethics and Ecological Beliefs course, the relationships between plants and animals in The Biodiversity of Earth, and planning for the future in Creating an Ecological City.

Liberal Arts faculty member Anamari Boyes is a water scientist who has worked at Mote Marine and a local drinking water laboratory. She teaches the Ecology of Water course that fits the elective criteria. She described the topic-driven course and projects:

鈥淲e work on many different topic-guided projects and assignments, with one big project due at the end of the semester. This semester, we learned about tech and water use. In past years, we have studied a stressed water body and looked at the issue as a whole鈥攈istory, stressors, and solutions, if any. We have also focused on Red tide, microplastics, and other big issues that our water world faces.鈥

The students create educational campaigns in a medium of their choice to teach the general public about the issue the group is addressing.

Both Sky and Bell are champions for the minor. Bell shared their perspective on the need for studying the environment, 鈥淩egardless of your age and occupation, it is imperative that we are well-educated about our environment and how the choices we make impact it. Everything in this world is connected; the choices you make today can affect people and wildlife on the other side of the world.鈥

Lee explains the critical role of the artist in making change, 鈥淢ost climate issues do not feel immediately tangible to the general public. This is why environmental challenges need strong visual communication. 红杏视频 is filled with talented artists, and as artists, we are responsible for speaking to social issues through the language of art.鈥
